Saving Water and Saving Lives with Flush for Good {Win $200 Giftcard}

By October 31, 2013Helping Others

Usually I try to be a little funny when I share a cause I care about, especially if that cause has to do with poop. I tell you something embarrassing about my life or some ridiculous thing one of my kids did. You would think I could come up with some bathroom horror story because of course, with 3 little kids, I’ve got them. I just don’t have anything funny to say about the world’s water and sanitation crisis right now and I don’t want to distract from the goal here.

I want to tell you about the Flush for Good Campaign from American Standard and how, with just a like or a share on Facebook or your purchase of a water saving Champion toilet, you can help. I also want you to make a pledge to save water in some way in your daily life. To thank you for reading, sharing and pledging 2 of my readers will win a $200 gift card to Home Depot or Lowes. Please read, share and help.

Flush For Good

The Scary Facts On Water

Every 21 seconds, a child dies from a water related disease.

Most illnesses are caused by fecal matter.

More people have a mobile than a toilet.

Half the people in the world do not have a safe way to go to the bathroom. Many use open-pit latrines that allow disease to spread through flies and other insects.  You can see that my bathroom mayhem is nothing compared to this.

Flush for Good to Save Water and Lives

The incredible thing is that we can help people around the world get clean water and provide them with a more sanitary place for their business without extremely complicated machines.

In 2011, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation initiated the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge to help bring sustainable solutions to those without access to safe and affordable sanitation. The Reinvent the Toilet Challenge works to create long term solutions to the global sanitation crisis. With present day knowledge of the sanitation crisis and toilets overall, American Standard reached out to the foundation to help create a short term solution — the SaTo (pronounced SAH-toh, derived from “Safe Toilet”) sanitary toilet pan.

A team of American Standard engineers conducted field research in villages located in the Rajshahi region of Bangladesh in 2012. The Product Innovation Team observed the widespread use of non-hygienic, open pit latrines shown above to defecate. Waste falls freely into the pit and people flush by pouring water into the pit.  The observed problem was that open pit.  It spread disease through the flies and other insects that could get in and out of it.  And…it smelled.

The SaTo uses ingeniously simple mechanical and water seals to reduce disease transmission by closing off pit latrines from the open air. No more open air latrines makes for a much safer and much cleaner environment.  These sanitary toilet pans will be distributed throughout Bangladesh by international development organizations BRAC USA and WaterAid.

Using the advanced technology we have to develop simple products that work around the world in very different conditions than ours is necessary to save lives.  Companies like American Standard, who devote their resources not only to developing the best toilets for you and me but also to using the same principles to help people around the world, make it possible to save a LOT of lives.

How to Give a SaTo

Just for this post, 40 SaTos will be donated. Yeah baby, you are helping just by reading!

For every Champion toilet sold in the U.S. and Canada in 2013, American Standard will donate one SaTo unit.  These potties are the bees knees, both water saving and really good at flushing whatever gets put in there.

For every 100 likes or shares of the The Flush for Good Facebook Page a SaTo will be donated. This is so easy my friends. Liking and sharing and giving.

American Standard has American Standard has committed to donating over 500,000 SaTo units to communities in need through the next year.  Please be a part of making this happen for as many communities as possible.

While American Standard has provided promotional support in the form of prizes, American Standard is not sponsoring or administering the giveaway on this blog.  I am passionate about making water change possible and I believe the combination of corporations and non profits making a commitment to help can make big changes for communities around the world every day.
