It’s no secret that my kids have very active imaginations. Most kids can imagine almost anything and bring their thoughts to life through play. We fully encourage imaginative play. We turn the TV off a lot to engage in some good old fashioned fun. However, when the kids need a break (because I somehow brought 3 non nappers into this world) or when it is 100 degrees outside or pouring rain, we love to watch shows and movies that inspire imagination and make us think. We love programs that build on what our kids are fascinated by.
Miles has been in love with dinosaurs for years. Simply due to the number of books on dinosaurs we own and read on a regular basis, we are all fully versed on a multitude of dinos and all of their different names. We know how big they are compared to a human and a dog and a chicken. We know how fast they are. We know whether they eat plants or other dinos or fish. We are rocking the dinosaur knowledge. Let me tell you, hearing a toddler say Parasaurolophus is just plain fun. It’s the one with the big crest on it’s head so it is easily identifiable while not as easily pronounced. I love it. So much funnier than T-Rex or Triceratops.
Of course, we take the kids to see the dinosaurs any time we can at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Miles is in heaven seeing the dinosaurs in real life, and is makes it easier for the kids to imagine a world where dinosaurs lived.
I can’t resist pretending they are going to eat us. That is like the highlight of Miles’ day. Priceless, I tell you. He laughs and laughs and laughs.
Sophia is too cool to play with me now. At 5 years old she is too cool for pretending to be eaten. It’s all like “Mom, you are embarrassing me” but I still have Violet. She thinks pretending to be a dinosaur is the bees knees!
So, now our love of the dinosaur is no secret and you must know that when Dino Dan came out on Nick Jr. we were pumped. The show is about a young boy who can see Dinosaurs in his real world and he helps to solve their problems. We see awesome dinosaurs as if they were in our world and learn all about their lives at the same time. It is really cool. Now Dino Dan is available as a movie and it definitely helps to inspire the imagination in my kids.
