There’s a new robot for kids on the scene. He’s cute and lives inside your phone. You simply attach your phone to the ROMO base and turn on the app. Boom! You have a robot ready to train and teach your kids the basics of programming.
All of my kids ages 7, 5 and 3 think ROMO is the cutest thing to roll through our house in a long time. He is funny and has come to Earth to train for the Robot Space Race. The problem is, he doesn’t know how to do much of anything when he arrives here on Earth, so you need to teach him. Poor ROMO!
Teaching ROMO to Win the Space Race
ROMO is recommended for kids 8 and up, but with a little help from me, my kiddos were off and running. You do need to know how to read to train ROMO, but after the mission instructions, entering the commands is very visual. I actually love what ROMO is teaching my kids while they teach him. From simple directions to basic math and even degrees with the tilt function, we are learning new concepts together and they can immediately see ROMO execute what they have “programmed” this cute little guy to do.
I am sure there are many more tricks for us to learn, but we started with going backwards and forwards for certain distances, tilting forward and backward, turning left or right and then, of course, teaching him to make certain faces when he does things. Sophia loves to have him fall in love, so our robot rolls around with googly eyes half the time. He does have a number of other awesome faces. For instance, we programmed ROMO to get dizzy when he is picked up and he gets angry if you shake him. We taught him this when he asked us to teach him how to defend himself. We learned his favorite color (it’s pink!), we used his moves to teach him how to dance and now the kids are teaching him to chase colors through the house in the hopes that soon he will be chasing them!
For each mission, the kids either Succeed with 1-3 stars or fail. If you fail a mission, a hint is given. The missions get progressively harder and the kids are really learning a lot about process, paying close attention and of course, trial and error. ROMO makes them think and not know how hard their little brains are working because he is so much fun!
There are a bunch of worlds to explore that we have not even unlocked yet. The company, Romotive, updates the app with new missions and games so there should always be some new challenge for you and your kids to complete.
If you totally finish all that ROMO has and you or your kid is a programming whiz, you can even download the Romotive SDK and write your own programs for ROMO. There is full documentation available and examples. I think this is awesome in that for older children or even adults who are interested in programming, ROMO will not be outgrown.
Dad or Grandma Can Talk to the Kids with ROMO
My husband travels a lot, so I love that he can log into ROMO.TV with our robot’s number and his face will show up on ROMO. ROMO can them move around and drive from room to room finding the kids and their dad can say hello or goodnight or just chat with them. This is one of the coolest things I have seen. I tested it sitting in my kitchen at the computer and pushing the directional arrows to guide ROMO until I found the kids in the other rooms. When ROMO approaches I can see them through his video monitor and they can see me. It is really incredible and the kids think it is awesome!
ROMO can also take pictures while he rolls around.
You can invite anyone to control ROMO from anywhere in the world. You can use any computer with the Chrome browser or your Phone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5th Gen, iPad 2, new iPad with Retina, or iPad mini.
Little ROMO Details
Currently you can dock the 4th and 5th generation iPod touch, the iPhone 4/4s and the iPhone 5 /5S/5C. The only problem I have found is that my kids are now always asking for my phone. Hey, at least they are learning from it!
You can purchase ROMO at Brookstone Online or In Store for $149.99.
You can learn more about ROMO and the awesome Romotive company on the Romotive website.
ROMO would make the perfect gift for your kids and the whole family. He is the pet that does a bunch of really cool things and never leaves a mess behind.
Do you have a kid who loves robots? ROMO is your guy!
Disclosure: I was sent a ROMO to review with my kids. Honestly, we really love him. I would never recommend a product that I would not purchase myself.
